The amount of empirical research focusing on the link between environmental degradation and forced migration has risen significantly during the last 20 years. The variety of empirical methods used by researchers is impressive, ranging from qualitative interviews to questionnaire surveys and highly sophisticated statistical methods. The need for more fieldwork and case studies in many parts of the world is however consensual. Recently a specific interest emerged around the issue of perceived versus “measured” environmental degradations. Do they correlate among affected populations ? If not – or partially – are perceptions more adequate to forecast migration intentions ? This session will attempt at an overview of recent empirical results on these topics.  Session in English, possibly multilingual (french, spanish)
