1178 | 770 | Territorial identity as a driving force for tourism development. The Valley of the Temples of Agrigento in southern Sicily and its music festivals | Raffaela Gabriella Rizzo; Paola Maria Rigobella; Veronica Scerra

Territories express themselves in their identity also through music, which, with its most diverse genres, is sometimes a primary resource in other cases a complementary resource. Over the years, we have seen – on a different scale – an increase in musical events: festivals, concerts, etc. This offer may or may not give rise to musical tourism phenomena. The study will examine the impact of music on the cultural identity of territories and landscapes. The assumption is that they are characterized by a variety of natural, cultural, material and intangible resources suitable for developing a slow and sustainable tourism potential._x000D_
Against this background, the case study in the Italian territory of Agrigento was examined. The Valley of the Temples (UNESCO WHL 1997) forms the core of its identity. Because of its cultural and environmental quality, the valley is a prime tourism destination. Tourists are drawn by the essence of the place (the ancient remains) and at the same time by the events which take place there: theatrical, cinematographic, and musical performances. Among them are major festivals – FestiValle and Ellenic Music Festival – and lively summer events._x000D_
They have been a driving force behind tourism development in a strong rebound since 2021. In the cultural capital of Agrigento 2025, the foregoing is echoed. In fact, this project highlights the many tangible and intangible assets in a larger territory, including Lampedusa and municipalities across the province._x000D_
The undeniable economic advantages of tourism stand in contrast to the costs of its impact on the territory and on the ancient monumental heritage. There is an urgent need, therefore, to enjoy them in a sustainable manner. _x000D_
The research was conducted using a mixed qualitative and quantitative approach. The work involved examination of primary and secondary sources, analysis of tourism data and semi-structured interviews.
