Social Activities

To participate in any of the extra-congress activities, prior registration for the Congress is mandatory.

If you are already registered for the congress, you must add the activities of your interest to your registration from the “REGISTRATION” section of the menu, by clicking on the “EDIT REGISTRATION” button and accessing it with the username and password we have sent you by email.

If you have not yet registered for the Congress, go to the “REGISTRATION” section and choose the option “NEW REGISTRATION.”

Some of the activities are not included in the Congress registration fee and must be paid separately All activities require prior registration to reserve a place, including free activities, as capacity is limited.

The activities allow companions who, by paying the corresponding amount, must be added from the same registration form.

Once the registration for the activity is completed, the payment must be made before the indicated deadline. The registration will not be confirmed until the payment is received.

Activities that do not reach a minimum number of registrations may be canceled. In such case, the paid amount will be refunded.

*Registration for the trips to Valencia, Ibiza, and Northern Catalonia during the weekend are no longer available.

Solsona: The socio-environmental dimension of wildfires

The CTFC (Forestry Sciences Centre of Catalonia) is a research and knowledge transfer centre. Its aim is to help modernise and hone the competitive edge of the forestry sector, aid rural development and foster the sustainable management of the natural environment.

To achieve its goals, the activities of the CTFC are organised around three programme lines: multifunctional forestry management, landscape dynamics and biodiversity, and bioeconomy, health and governance.

Its research work focusses on key issues, including the balance of the functions of the natural environment, adaptation to climate change and gaining competitive edge throughout the value chain.

On your trip to the CTFC a representative of the Centre will give a presentation about its work and lines of research, followed by a field trip to gain greater insight into its work: the socio-environmental dimension of wildfires.

The activity is jointly promoted by the CTFC, the Catalonian Office of the School of Professional Geographers (DCGC) and the Association of Professional Geographers of Catalonia (AGPC), to underscore the importance of the application of knowledge in the work of the professional geographer.

Barcelona’s Superillas have become an example of international scope. The reduction of pollution by restricting the space dedicated to cars and pedestrianization is the main strategy. Greening has also been used as a way to soften the temperature in the streets and favour contact with nature for the neighbours. Despite all these good intentions, the debate on the effects of the Superilla in Barcelona has also raised more critical assessments. Among these assessments are: the increase in the price of land, the effects on commerce, the use of public space by terraces of bars and restaurants, and the importance of the action at other scales beyond the micro-local. The fieldwork will raise these questions while observing the landscape of the Superilla de Sant Antoni and the recent green axes of the Eixample (Compte Borrell- Consell de Cent). The starting point will be the Facultat de Geografia i Història of the UB and the language will be Spanish.

The route around L’Hospitalet de Llobregat aims to familiarise the participant with the composition of the urban and residential development and structural growth of the local districts of an area with a very high density of population. The planned itinerary runs from the town centre through to the outer crown of the city. We shall learn about the origins of the city, its importance in the territorial development of the Greater Metropolitan Area of Barcelona and of its unique qualities.

The Llobregat Delta is an area of some 90km2 that has been greatly encroached by the voracious appetite of the city of Barcelona. Approximately two thirds of the Llobregat Delta have already been occupied by urban areas, infrastructures and industrial and logistic estates. The remaining third part is characterised by a landscape matrix of farmlands with landscape cells, especially in the coastal interface, of natural dominance (wetlands, dunes, etc.). The aim of the 3-hours fieldwork is to discover the landscape diversity of the Llobregat Delta, focussing on the persistence of peri-urban agriculture (and the policies developed in order to favour its protection and development, and the alternative food networks linking these fresh productions with the neighbouring city of Barcelona), the changes of the Llobregat river-bed (mainly in order to avoid flood damages) and the expansion of infrastructures in recent decades (airport, highways, high-speed train, etc.).

Train from Barcelona to Valencia (from 08:00 to 12:00 hrs approx.).

Afternoon/evening: Walking tour of the old town:
We start in l’Eixample, an area in which the style of the architecture is reminiscent of Barcelona, but on a far smaller scale.
We walk on to the old town, through the new Plaça de l’Ajuntament, now a pedestrian precinct.
We continue to the new Plaça del Mercat, the new Plaça de la Reina and the Plaça de la Mare de Déu, all now pedestrian precincts.
We will discover the charms of the Gothic Valencia, with buildings and streets that breathe history.
We will learn of the new mobility policies adopted by the town, which give priority to pedestrians and cyclists, finally ending the dominance of the motor vehicle.
We will explore the city’s extensive network of cycle lanes, which make the best of the flatness of the town and prioritise the use of this sustainable form of transport.
We will analyse the refurbishment of the old town and how it has influenced the character and identity of Valencia District 1.
We will tackle the question of the gentrification of the old town and how it has driven out many of the original residents.
We will track the urban developments and experiments of the old towns of Barcelona and Palma de Mallorca and compare them to the situation in Valencia.
Evening: Evening free to enjoy the local cuisine and explore the city in your own way.
